Getting Started on Your Law School EssayGetting into a good law school can be quite difficult. However, it is not impossible. You should keep in mind that admission into law school comes as a series of steps. The first step that you must conquer is the law school essay. What exactly is the purpose of the law school essay? In a nutshell, the law school essay helps the admissions committee relate with you as a person. Without the admissions essay, the committee would only have a bunch of facts and figures to judge you from. As we all know, our lives cannot truly be summarized in our scholastic records. By writing a law school essay, we have the opportunity to rectify any erroneous impressions that the records might give. The law school essay allows you to plead your case to the admissions committee. This means that a huge part of your admission relies on the law school essay. This knowledge alone may cause you to become nervous or develop a writer’s block. In order to help you get started on your law school essay, here are some tips: 1) Include your major accomplishments – The law school essay is all about showcasing you. This means that you should include your major accomplishments. You should definitely think about the things that you have done which have had significant impact on your life. Do not limit yourself to those accomplishments which are listed on your records. Remember that these accomplishments are already known by the committee. Think on what accomplishments truly reflect who you are as a person. 2) What makes you different? – It is important that your law school essay helps you stand out among all of the applicants for the school. You need to showcase any characteristic, skill or talent which distinguishes you from the rest of the applicants. You have to keep in mind that the admissions committee will be facing a lot of brilliant essays and this will inevitably cause them to get bored. If your essay does not really show anything special about you, then people won’t waste their time reading it. 3) Your greatest challenge – What, in your perspective, is the greatest challenge that you have ever faced? Most people believe that we show our true strength in the face of adversity. As such, you should definitely point out the various trials that you have faced and life and show how these trials made you a better person. By doing so, you will be able to showcase your character to the admissions committee. 4) Goals – In your law school essay, you need to show your long term goals and how going to law school can bring you closer to them. This will help the admissions committee understand just how important law school is for you. This will also help them assess how hard you will be working in order to get into law school and how hard you will be working once inside. 5) What makes them different? – Why do you want to go to that particular law school? This will show them how loyal a student you will be. By letting them know why you think that school is different, they won’t be able to shrug you off with the usual line of “we know that there are other institutions which can provide you with the opportunity you need”.
